Eight days by bike through the Lofoten Islands: ferries, fjords, fishing villages, and a climb that earns every meter. Hostels instead of a tent so you're not at the mercy of the weather, with Henningsvær as the star stop.
An out-and-back along the E10: up to Henningsvær, then back down through Furu Café and Å — with Nusfjord, Stamsund, and the beaches of Haukland along the way.
The actual recorded route, day by day — Moskenes up to Henningsvær and back via Furu Café and Å. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Six days of biking, three base hostels, nothing over 90 km.
Ferry from Bodø, then bike to the hostel. Steep terrain near Fredvang.
Stops: Reine (food + shopping for Sat/Sun, everything closed on Sunday)
☕ Coffee stop along the way: Ramberg Resort →Crossing the Nappstraumen tunnel — convoy every 30 min outside rush hour from the Napp side.
Stops: Nusfjord (detour, historic village)
Arrival at the most photogenic village in the archipelago — the football pitch on its own tiny islet.
🧭 What to do in Henningsvær →Short but demanding climb: 3 km round trip, ~540 m of elevation gain — the climb counts for more than the distance. Steep and spectacular, one of the best of the trip. Afternoon bike ride to Kabelvåg (museum and cathedral).
🥾 More on the climb →Long route along the north coast to avoid backtracking — Unstad surf beach, the remote Eggum coastline, and the Lofotr Viking Museum along the way.
☕ Coffee stop along the way: Furu Café →Second tunnel crossing — convoy every hour outside rush hour from the Leknes side, tighter than the first. Afternoon ferry with time to spare before the flight.
Plan for a budget of about €100 a night if you go hostel to hostel like on this route — it varies by season and how far ahead you book.
Two nights here is enough for more than just sleeping. Here's what we did.
3 km round trip, ~540 m of elevation gain — steep from the first step, but short. Views over the Henningsværstraumen strait and the Presten cliff. One of the best climbs of the whole trip.
The only place that opens relatively early (9:00) in the village. If you're heading out early, it's this or waiting for the next village.
Besides the sauna, I took a yoga class in their studio — a beautiful wooden space right on the water, with candles and the sea coming in through the door.
There aren't many places to stop along the road — these are the ones worth it.
Lovely owners with an inspiring story, quotes written on the walls. The best cookie I've ever had — biscoff with white chocolate.
A stop in both directions — very friendly staff and good views.
Lessons learned on the ground, so it doesn't catch you off guard.
The essentials for six days of biking, without overloading.
Before I leave, I split all my clothes into two bags — one for the first 3 days of biking, another for the next 3. When I switch from the main suitcase to the bike panniers, I know exactly which bag to grab without having to dig through everything.
